Childhood/Family Life- In 1324 Geoffery's father, John, was kidnapped by his aunt with plans to marry her daughter to keep their family property. In 1349, John married Agnes Copton and inherited all the property from the imprisoned aunt. Chaucer traveled to France and Spain. Later, he met his wife Phillipa Roet. She was "a lady-in-waiting" to Edward III's queen. It's not definite how many children they had; most assume three or four. Geoffery's son, Thomas, became chief butler to four kings and Speaker of the House of Commons. Thomas' daughter, Alice married Duke of Suffolk. Geoffery also had two other daughters named Elizabeth and Agnes, and another son named Lewis. In 1378, King Richard II sent Geoffery to Milan as a mercenary. This is where Chaucer got his main character the Knight in the Canterbury Tales.
